About the codex
If everything were lost, this is where we would start again.
The inventions of humankind: what they are, how they work and how to build them again.
The codex is a work of general education. Building or using these techniques is done at your own risk; follow local rules and professional advice.
How the codex is made
Every plate is written from sources: museums, encyclopedias, academic and engineering references. Dates and figures are checked against at least two independent sources, listed at the bottom of each plate, and each plate is reviewed before it is published. When sources disagree, the text says so.
The illustrations of the plates are produced with an image-generation tool, then checked by hand: every mechanism, count and connection is compared with the sources. The interactive figures are drawn in code from a model of the machine.
Technical words are explained in the glossary.
Keeping a copy
The whole codex can be downloaded, with every plate, figure and language, and read without a connection: Take the codex with you.
